KVOA – News 4 Tucson (AZ) – recently profiled the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program that is giving students a chance to experience a driverless car. The program is on the campus of the University of Arizona this week. Associate professor of engineering Jonathan M. Sprinkle, Ph.D. (TN G ’99), spoke about the research and car.
“We have a bunch of computers in the back that are evaluating sensor data, and in some cases we have cell phone applications that are deciding where the car should go, and in some cases we are doing it on a laptop computer,” said Dr. Sprinkle. Read the article for more details on the “self-tasks” technology that Dr. Sprinle estimates will be more common in the next five to ten years.
