West Virginia University has announced that Gregory S. Babe, WV A ’80, has been named to the West Virginia University’s Board of Governors by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. Babe is currently president and CEO of Liquid X, a technology company headquartered in Pittsburgh (PA). Previously, he served as CEO of Orbital Engineering, president and CEO of Bayer Corp., and president and CEO of Bayer MaterialScience LLC. Read the press release
He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from WVU and as an undergraduate he served as WV Alpha Chapter president of Tau Beta Pi. WVU President Gordon Gee sad, “Greg Babe is one of West Virginia University’s most accomplished graduates. He is a seasoned and experienced senior executive whose career as the CEO of Bayer and now Liquid X has taken him all over the world. During those travels, one thing has remained constant, and that is his love and devotion to his native state and his alma mater.”

Tara L. Alvarez, Ph.D. (NJ B ’94), “will receive an Edison Patent Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey for a novel test she and a colleague designed to help eye doctors predict how well their patients will adapt to progressive lenses.” Dr. Alvarez is a professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Vision and Neural Engineering Laboratory at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has appointed a new general manager. Jeffrey D. Knueppel, NY I ’85, joined SEPTA in 1988 as an entry-level structural engineer focusing on bridge and tunnel repairs. He has risen through the ranks as chief engineer, deputy general manager, and now general manager. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the Cooper Union School of Engineering. Click here for the news announcement.
