Earlier this month, the University of New Mexico School of Engineering recognized the accomplishments of seven of its alumni at the Distinguished Alumni Award event. Three of the 2015 distinguished alumni honorees are Tau Bates. They are:
Carol L. Adkins, Ph.D. – (NM B ’81) director of the energy technologies and system solutions center at Sandia National Laboratories (CA).
J. Charles Jennett, Ph.D. – (SC A ’63) past president of Texas A&M International University and past dean of Clemson’s College of Engineering.
James J. McNally, Ph.D. – (NY X ’75) director of strategic development for Applied Technology Associates

The results are in for the 2015 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. This year’s competition took place in Irvine, CA, from October 8-18. A team of students from Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ) took home first place this year with their SURE (sustainable + resilient) house. Not only did the team meet the challenge by designing, building, and operating the most cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive solar powered house, but they also took first place in four of five juried contests. The University at Buffalo (NY) and California Poly rounded out the top three spots.

The annual West Virginia University (WVU) Pumpkin Drop will take place on Friday, October 23. The event is hosted by the WVU department of mechanical and aerospace engineering and “brings together more than 350 elementary, middle, and high school teams region that have spent months designing protective casings for their pumpkins based on learned concepts in physics, aerodynamics and architectural design.”
The West Virginia Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at WVU, will be on hand to recycle the material used for the pumpkins protective casings. According to the article, last year the WV Alpha donated 16 trash bags of bedding and clothes to Goodwill, “delivered two dump trucks of compostable material to the WVU Farm, filled an entire compacting recycling truck with cardboard, and disposed of several dump trucks full of garbage.”
