The News-Enterprise (KY) is reporting that Jason C. Stith, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., (KY A ’04), has received two recent honors. Stith was named among the top 20 engineers under 40 in December by ENR Midwest, an engineering trade publication. He was also named the Kentucky Young Engineer of the Year by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers. Currently, he works as a civil engineer at Michael Baker International in Louisville, KY, and consults at other offices nationwide.

Howard University (Washington, DC) and it’s efforts to produce more engineers and get them hired in Silicon Valley was the subject of a recent article in the Bloomberg Businessweek. The story profiles Howard professor and computer science department chair Legand L. Burge III, Ph.D., (DC A ’92), and his efforts to revamp the department’s curriculum.
It also profiles four Howard students that stood out to a Google software engineer that was helping to prepare computer science majors for the application process. Two of the students are Tau Bates: Lena Alston, DC A 2015, and Remington A. Holt, DC A 2015. Alston eventually secured a job offer from Google as a programmer in New York. Holt completed two successful internships at Google, but has not received a job offer. Two images of Holt wearing his Tau Beta Pi sweatshirt appear in the article.

Professor Gregory D. Wight, P.E. (VT B ’67), has been named Vermont’s 2016 Engineer of the Year by the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers. Wight is a mechanical engineering professor at Norwich University (VT) and is “recognized (as an) expert in air quality engineering.” He has previously served as an associate dean at Norwich and as the director of the university’s School of Engineering.
According to the news article, Wight has developed and taught nearly 33 different courses to engineering students; volunteers with MathCounts, FIRST Lego League, and Engineers Without Borders; and served as a chapter advisor to the Vermont Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi for ten years.
