Andrew J. Viterbi, Ph.D. (MA B ’57), is the recipient of the 2016 Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering. Dr. Viterbi was cited “for development of the Viterbi algorithm, its transformational impact on digital wireless communications, and its significant applications in speech recognition and synthesis and in bioinformatics.”
He is president of the Viterbi Group, co-founder of Linkabit and Qualcomm, and professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego. In 2004, the University of Southern California School of Engineering, where Dr. Viterbi completed his Ph.D., was renamed the Viterbi School of Engineering in his and his late wife’s honor. The Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) will host the 2016 ACHS Annual Council Meeting in Savannah, GA, from February 10-14, 2016. This year’s meeting theme is “Engagement is Our Key to Success.” Tau Beta Pi was one of the initial six honor societies in the formation of the ACHS. The organization “is a visibly cohesive community of national and international honor societies, individually and collaboratively exhibiting excellence in scholarship, service, programs, and governance.”
