Professor Profile, TBP Events, & Student-Athlete Feature (Feb. 2016)

Kathryn A. Whitehead, Ph.D. (DE A ’02), is an assistant professor of chemical and biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). She was profiled on the CMU Facebook page for her efforts to find new ways to fight mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin B cell lymphoma, by attacking cancer cells from the inside out. “Dr. Whitehead is developing tiny particles called siRNA-loaded lipid nanoparticles which selectively enter and destroy lymphoma cells.”

Last year, she was named to Popular Science‘s 2015 Brilliant Ten for her innovative work on drug delivery systems. Dr. Whitehead earned her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware where she was a two-term president of the DE Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi. She has also recently been active in the Tau Beta Pi Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, alumni chapter.

The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has highlighted senior Dominic Granato, MA D 2016, for “channeling his creativity into his academic and professional interests” as the NESCAC Friday Feature talented student-athlete. Granato is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering at Tufts University (MA). He plays forward on the Tufts’ varsity men’s hockey team.
