At the recent University of Florida (UF) Engineering Leadership Summit, biomedical engineering graduate student Shannon B. Brown, FL A ’14, received the Linda Hudson Scholarship. At this year’s summit, Linda P. Hudson, FL A ’72, was a keynote speaker. Hudson is chairman and CEO of The Cardea Group, past CEO of BAE Systems (2009-14), and a UF alumna.
Brown is a second year Ph.D. student at UF “developing nanoparticles for drug delivery to diseased joints.” According to the announcement, she has served the University through a variety of groups with an increasing level of responsibility and leadership. As a member of the FL Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, she has held six different officer positions, including as vice president.

Justin H. Le, NV B 2016, is the 2016 recipient of the OUR-UNLV Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award. Le will graduate this spring semester with a degree in electrical and computer engineering and a Mathematics minor. He was recognized for his “diverse research projects in engineering,” being lead author on the paper “A Deep Belief Network for Classifying Remotely-Sensed Hyperspectral Data,” and for service activities including serving as the Nevada Beta Chapter President of Tau Beta Pi.

In recognition of the 50th anniversary of women’s collegiate athletics at South Dakota State University (SDSU), the school compiled a team honoring the 50 greatest women athletes in Jackrabbit history, chosen by SDSU’s 50 years in Women’s Athletics committee and a fan vote. Two Tau Bates made the team and have plenty in common. Both were outstanding athletes at SDSU, excellent engineering students, and both were recognized for their accomplishments with Tau Beta Pi Laureate awards.
First, Lori S. Bocklund, SD B ’83, president of Strategic Contact (OR). Bocklund earned her degree in electrical engineering from SDSU, was a 5-time All-American runner, and her cross-country team twice was national champion during her participation. In addition, she served as vice president of the SD Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi and was a 1983 Laureate.
The other is Megan M. Waytashek, SD B ’15, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Her degree from SDSU is in mechanical engineering, she is a TBP Fellow and Laureate recipient, and served as recording secretary for the SD Beta Chapter. She was a All-District, All-Conference, and All-American in academics and athletics (basketball) and during her playing career the women’s basketball team participated in four NCAA National Tournaments.
