Collegiate Chapter Community Outreach (May 2016)

The National Institute of Environmental Health Science published an article about a recent outreach event organized and conducted by the local chapters of the Institute of Civil Engineers and Puerto Rico Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi conducting water quality education activities for the Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus. More than 40 volunteers of all ages participated in the activities intended to monitor the water quality, educate about the importance of good water quality, and provide practical experience for volunteers.

A profile of the winning teams from the 2016 Physics Roller Coaster Competition included details on two $500 Tau Beta Pi Scholarships awarded to two of student winners of the competition given by the Iowa Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at Iowa State University (ISU).

“The real world always seemed like a separate entity from the engineering classroom,” said Brett Carrier. “Participating in the Tau Beta competition has made me realize that I can get involved with real engineering while in high school.” According to the article, The ISU Tau Beta Pi- Iowa Alpha Scholars Program is designed to help recognize freshmen and sophomores for their work and to promote their membership for when students become eligible in future years.

On April 16, the Texas Epsilon Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at the University of Houston, hosted a full-day of MindSET sessions for K-12 students from Dear Park High School and Beckondorff Junior High School. Approximately 20 students, took part in a marshmallow activity, to learn about truss structures; an ice cream lab, to learn about freezing points; and a Sumobot competition, to introduce coding and circuits.
