Glenn H. Balbus – MD A 2016, a mechanical engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University, first team All-American, and Academic All-American of the year in men’s at-large; he is a three-time captain of the men’s fencing team and finished his career tied for 12th in Hopkins history, among all weapons. He graduated with a 4.00 GPA, received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and will begin Ph.D. studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Mitchell Black Jr. – MA D 2016, a double major in mechanical engineering and astrophysics at Tufts University (MA), first team All-American, and Academic All-American of the year in men’s track & field. He is a two-time first-team academic All-America and was this year’s top honoree. Black is a four-time NCAA Division III champion, ten-time All-American, and won Div. III championships in the 800-meters at both the indoor and outdoor national championships. Next, he will enter the University of Michigan Graduate School of aerospace engineering.
Margaret G. Guo – MA B 2016, received degrees in electrical engineering & computer science as well as bioengineering at MIT, first team All-American, and Academic All-American of the year in women’s at-large; she is a fly and free style swimmer and collected four All-American honors at the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She is a Rhodes finalist, Goldwater Scholar, and served as president of the local Society of Women Engineers chapter.

The Kansas Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at Kansas State University (KSU), annually recognizes an outstanding underclassman for their scholastic excellence and involvement at KSU and in their community. This year’s recipient is Anna L. Kucera, KS G 2018, a biological systems engineering and biology major with an emphasis in pre-veterinary medicine. She founded and is president of the Beyond Homeschooled student group, is a mentor for Women Engineering, and former secretary of the Alpha Phi Omega chapter.
According to the announcement biography, Kucera has been on a leadership trip to Ecuador and a veterinary service trip to Nicaragua. She also regularly volunteers her time at veterinary clinics and choir functions.

A group of professionals, including Eddie M. Guerra, P.E. (PR A ’08), have founded The Nuclear Alternative Project and are looking for driven engineers to join them. The initiative is focused on community engagement for nuclear energy awareness. Guerra is a structural engineer with RIZZO Associates specializing in earthquake engineering and structural reliability of nuclear power plants. “His motivation for the Nuclear Alternative Project stems from his drive to eradicate myths and public misconceptions about risk and overall safety of nuclear power plants.” Learn how to get involved here.
