Tau Beta Pi has published the list of professional development presenters and topics for this year’s Convention in San Diego, CA. From 9am to 5:30pm on Friday, October 7, the Association will offer more than 25 sessions on a variety of topics from ethics, to networking and finance. These sessions are included in the registration costs for 2016 Convention attendees. For the first time, Tau Beta Pi will also be allowing walk-in registration for as little as $50 to attend the professional development sessions and a concert that evening by Baldwin Chiu, P.E. “Only Won” (CA U ’98) and Larissa Lam.

Jordan M. Dorbrich, NV A 2016, a recent mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, has been named the Mountain West’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2015-16 season – the first such honor for a Wolf Pack student-athlete in the school’s four-year history in the conference. Dobirch was a three-year team captain of the football team. He will begin his studies this fall in Nevada’s MBA program.
According to the news announcement, the award is “the highest honor presented to a student-athlete by the conference. The award is bestowed annually to one male and one female who best exemplify the term ‘student-athlete’ by achieving excellence in academics, athletics and community involvement over the course of their collegiate career.” Nevada coach Brian Polian, said “He (Dobrich) represents all that is good about college athletics – he is a terrific person, an exceptional and accomplished student, and a talented athlete. This award is a fitting way to cap his career at the University of Nevada.”

The Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society (SGES) will host its August meeting at the Edgewood Condo Clubhouse (Orange Park, FL) on Saturday, August 13. Jim Vearil, FL A ’90, will be the event speaker and will talk on “Researching and Using Land Records” to find and research county, state and federal land records. He will also share some uses of land records in family history research.
Vearil recently retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers having worked for them since 1974. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida in environmental engineering. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, see the Eventful page.
