FL Service Commission, MIT Volunteers, & KSU Top Company

Governor Rick Scott has announced the appointment of Donald J. Polmann, Ph.D., P.E. (NY G ’79), as the next member of the Florida Public Service Commission. Dr. Polmann has been a senior manager at Atkins, an international design and engineering firm. His engineering degrees include: a bachelor’s from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a master’s from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. from MIT.

The MIT Alumni Association has selected to honor three volunteers “for their work with classes, clubs, reunions, giving, and prospective students.” This year’s three honorees will receive the Bronze Beaver award on September 24. Two of them are Tau Bates. They are:

Gerald M. Appelstein – (MA B ’80) a retired vice president of trading with Tauber Oil and chemical engineering graduate of MIT. He is recognized as a dedicated volunteer and for his sustained service.

Barry R. Bronfin – (MA B ’60) a venture capitalist and chemical engineering graduate of MIT. He is recognized for his devotion and assistance with fundraising and STEM education.

The Kansas Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at Kansas State University (KSU) will host and sponsor the 33rd annual Career Fair Recognition Banquet on Wednesday, September 21. The 2016 top company award will go to Henderson Engineers Inc., a multidisciplinary engineering firm headquartered in Kansas City. According to the article, Henderson Engineers funds two scholarships annually in the KSU College of Engineering and currently employs more than 100 of its graduates.
