Gary B. Veurink, SD A ’72, and his wife Ruth, were recognized this month at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology for establishing “an endowment to help prepare chemical engineering students for their careers.” In their honor, the industrial-scale chemical engineering teaching laboratory has been named the Veurink Chemical Engineering Unit Operations Laboratory.
According to the news article, the gift will provide monies for continuous upgrade of experiments and to infuse future innovative technologies into the 5,000-square-foot laboratory. It will also fund the prestigious Gary and Ruth Veurink Scholarship, which will cover at least half a student’s annual tuition and fees. Gary graduated from SD Mines with a degree in chemical engineering and joined Dow Chemical Co. where he rose to become a corporate vice president.

On November 1, the New York Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at Columbia University, hosted its Fall 2016 initiation. A total of 36 new members were initiated. Scott M. Trocchia, DC G ’11, is the chief advisor to the NY Alpha Chapter and he took an image of the group (below). In a recent issue of Health Physics News, it was announced that J. Matthew Barnett, AZ B ’90, has been named the new chair of the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) N13, Radiation Protection. The ASC N13 maintains American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accreditation and the Health Physics Society (HPS) serves as the ASC N13 Secretariat. ANSI/HPS supports the N13 radiation protection standards in the areas of instrumentation, internal and external dosimetry, and environmental, medical, and operational health physics.
Barnett is radioactive air task lead at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA. He earned his bachelor’s degree (electrical engineering) and master’s degree from Arizona State University.
