Chemical Engineering Student Profile, Tufts Endowment, & Academic All-American

The Paducah Sun profiled Chandni Joshi, KY A 2017, for her outreach efforts and success in engineering competitions. Joshi is a senior chemical engineering major at the University of Kentucky where she researches solutions for waste accumulations in developing countries. According to the article, she has gone to Uganda, Gabon, and Cameroon to work with non-governmental organizations to teach how technology can help reduce waste accumulation.

In addition, Joshi has competed in 11 competitions for student research, placing first or second in eight of them. She was recently published in the Journal of Sustainable Development for her work on low-cost methods for converting plastic waste to fuel. “Seeing how engineering can impact real-life problems has helped me see how this technology can help others emerge from poverty and (improve) their standards of living,” said Joshi.

Tufts University (MA) highlighted Maria Giatrelis, MA D ’89, and her brother Rich Ferrelli for establishing an endowed scholarship at the university in their parents’ name. The pair is paying it forward to benefit those who are first-generation students like they were.

With the support of her parents, Maria graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and progressed from vice president of sales to president of a software company in Cambridge, MA. Read the article for more information on the family and endowment fund. “My parents would be honored to know that they are living on by helping other kids have an opportunity,” says Maria.
