The Arizona Daily Star recently profiled renowned mining engineer Louis D. Ricketts (1859-1940) whose “contributions to mining operations in Arizona and Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th centuries enabled the greater development of second-grade ores on a massive scale for a profit.” Ricketts, CA B 1881, earned dual degrees in chemistry and economic geology from Princeton University. He was initiated into Tau Beta Pi in 1932 at the California Institute of Technology as an eminent engineer.

Read the article for more details on Ricketts’ contributions, including discovering a method for treating the oxidized overburden on a large scale using the Ajo leaching process, which he is credited with developing.
