UC President, Early Career Awards, & VP of Academics

University of Louisville acting president, Neville G. Pinto, Ph.D. (OH B ’80), has been named the next president at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Dr. Pinto previously spent 26 years as a faculty member and dean at UC. He began his new position in February 2017.

Dr. Neville became UofL’s interim executive vice president and provost in May 2015. He was chosen to serve as provost permanently in June 2016. In late July 2016, he was tapped as Louisville’s acting president. Read the news announcement for more information.

In January, 102 scientists and researchers were selected as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). This is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Eric T. Baumgartner, Ph.D. (OH I ’88), has been appointed as the next vice president of academics at Milwaukee School of Engineering, effective July 15, 2017. Currently, Dr. Baumgartner is dean of the College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University. Previously, he was a senior member of the engineering staff at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

According to the announcement, while at the Jet Propulsion Lab, Dr. Baumgartner held leadership roles on the Mars Science Laboratory Sample Acquisition/Sample Processing and Handling team and Mars Exploration Rover project that successfully launched, landed and operated the Curiosity, Spirit and Opportunity rovers on the surface of Mars. His Ph.D. in mechanical engineering was earned at the University of Notre Dame.
