DiscoverE is leading the charge for Girl Day or “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” day on Thursday, February 23. This year’s focus is on role models and how they can “educate girls about how engineers change our world.” A great example of what the engineering community is doing and can do is the “Girl Day at UT Austin.”
This event will take place on Saturday, February 25, at the University of Texas at Austin. According to the event’s web page, “over 8,000 elementary and middle school students are expected to participate with more than 1,300 volunteers and 150 student organizations, community organizations and companies volunteering.” The Texas Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at UT-Austin, will host a hands-on activity for attendees at this year’s Girl Day. In addition, Purdue University (IN) is hosting a similar event to celebrate Girls Day.

Business Insider has published a list of the “43 most powerful female engineers of 2017” in honor of National Engineer’s week. The list profiles the most powerful women engineers in U.S. tech. Many are Tau Beta Pi members, including:

Michelle J. Quizon, NV B 2017, was recently profiled by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Quizon is a mechanical engineering student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is also active in powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting. Quizon is the 2015 International Powerlifting League World Champion for the 52-kg Junior Women’s class.
The theme for SWE’s 2017 Conference is “always connecting…always engineering.” For Quizon, this means “continuously contemplating how to execute my lifts more efficiently.” Click here for more from Quizon and details about the largest conference for women engineers.
