More Pie (Day), Gates Cambridge Scholar, & WVU Pi Day video

At least 100 Tau Beta Pi chapters, alumni and collegiate, participated in Pi Day activities on Tau Beta Pi Day (March 14). Many will host events throughout the month. The image above is from MD Beta during a community service event shoveling snow for the Snow Angels Program in Takoma Park. The MI Gamma chapter received local news coverage for their large-scale pie giveaway. Also, the CA Theta Chapter posted an image from their Pi Day festivities.

Sarita S. Deshpande, IL Z 2017, is one of 36 American students to win the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship for graduate studies at the University of Cambridge. According to the news announcement, Deshpande will pursue a master’s in medical science in the department of clinical neurosciences. Currently, she is majoring in bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Her focus will be on the study of causes of glaucoma and the mechanisms for cell death. Deshpande is only the fourth student from UIC to win this scholarship. She has won several other university awards and currently conducts research on image segmentation and processing for optical coherence tomography angiography.
