The University of Michigan has announced that professor of mechanical engineering, and former associate dean for research, Dawn M. Tilbury, Ph.D. (MN A ’89), has been selected to serve as Directorate for Engineering for the National Science Foundation (NSF).
In her new role, Dr. Tilbury will be “charged with supporting engineering research and education critical to the nation’s future and fostering innovations to benefit society.” Her term can last up to four years, but she plans to return to the Michigan faculty upon completion of her term. Jeffery D. Schone, AZ G ’96, received the 2017 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award for his outstanding achievements throughout his career. Schone is a 56th civil engineer squadron environmental engineer at Luke Air Force Base. He was recognized for his “continual dedication to the Defense Department mission and integrated support of sustainability initiatives.”
Schone has provided more than 17 years of service to the Defense Department. According to the article, “he has managed and developed every facet of environmental compliance programs, pioneering pollution prevention initiatives and managing large scale remediation programs and construction projects for the Air Force, Navy, and Army.” He earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Northern Arizona University.

The Louisiana Engineering Foundation has awarded Norman D. Pumphrey, Ph.D., P.E. (LA G ’76), the 2017 Professional Engineer Faculty Professionalism Award for “encouraging their colleagues and who benefit their students and the profession with the promotion of professionalism within their universities.”
Dr. Pumphrey is an associate professor of civil engineering and program chair of construction engineering technology at Louisiana Tech University. He has been at Louisiana Tech for 27 years.
