The Knoxville News Sentinel recently profiled Cong T. Trinh, Ph.D. (TX E ’03), for being named the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Young Faculty award winner, a highly competitive grant, by the U.S. Department of Defense. Dr. Trinh is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Tennessee.

His project – the Virulent Pathogen Resistance program – trains supercomputers to quickly identify a pathogen – be it virus, bacteria or fungi – and then use genetics to inactivate it. According to the article, “the process would take days or weeks, as opposed to the months needed to treat with antibiotics or vaccines, and would adapt as pathogens mutate.”
