A donation from alumnus Nick Des Champs, Ph.D. (VA B ’62), and wife Rebecca, will establish a faculty chair in the department of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech. The inaugural Des Champs Chair will be held by Azim Eskandarian, Ph.D. (DC G ’82), a professor and head of the mechanical engineering department.
According to the new article, Des Champs “enjoyed enjoyed a distinguished career in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, or HVAC, industry after earning his B.S. and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in mechanical engineering.”

On February 24, the 18th annual Kentucky Bluegrass LEGO Robotics Competition was held at Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) engineering and sciences building. The event is run by WKU engineering students and members of the KY Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi and WKU engineering faculty and staff. Click here for the article.
The challenge for elementary and middle school teams is to build an autonomous robot from LEGO Mindstorm kits to navigate two different surfaces. A total of 41 students competed on 15 teams in either the “Engineer-in-Training” division or the “Professional Engineers” division. The winning teams were from Briarwood Elementary and the Johnson Homeschool team.
