Atlanta BBQ Event, UAH K-12 MindSET, & Marconi Prize (March 2018)

The Tau Beta Pi Georgia Alpha Chapter, at Georgia Tech, invites area TBP alumni, regardless of initiating chapter, to a social event with current student members and initiates. The students are very excited to be part of Tau Beta Pi, and they hope that you can make it to their event. It would mean a lot to them to meet TBP alumni.

The event is a BBQ picnic on Saturday, March 31, at noon at the large Bent monument on Georgia Tech’s campus. Please register here if you can/may make it.

Ahead of spring break, members of the Alabama Delta Chapter, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, helped facilitate a MindSET project with Morris P-8 School. The K-12 MindSET program aims to engage K-12 students in engineering through different STEM-related modules.

The image above was from the hands-on portion of the recent activity session that included building and testing (popsicle stick) bridges made by the students. Visit the chapter’s Facebook page for more information.

The 2018 Marconi Prize has been awarded to Frank Thomson “Tom” Leighton, Ph.D. (NJ D ’78), co-founder & CEO of Akamai Technologies, Inc. He was recognized for “his fundamental contributions to the technology and establishment of content delivery networks.”

According to the news announcement, Dr. Leighton will donate his prize money to The Akamai Foundation, with the goal of promoting the pursuit of excellence in mathematics in grades K-12 to encourage the next generation of technology innovators. A reminder that the deadline to apply for the 2018 Paul Baran Young Scholar Award is June 30, 2018.
