TBP/ SAE Scholarships, Jobs, & UI Innovation Center Director (Aug. 2018)

Each year six incoming college freshman are awarded a Tau Beta Pi/ SAE Engineering Scholarship of $1,000 to pursue an engineering or related science degree through an ABET accredited program. The recipients for 2018-19 are:

– Yuanqi Cai
– Scott Hadley
– Bhagirath Mehta, Maine West HS, Des Plaines, IL – computer science at Stanford University
– Lorae Stojanovic, Cincinnati Country Day School, OH – Harvard University
– Lillian Sun

1. Engineer, Engineering Test Lab at LORD Corporation in Erie, Pennsylvania
2. Intern – Weapons Quality Integration R&D with Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico
3. Provost and Dean of the College at The Citadel in South Carolina
4. Computational Optimization and Design Engineer with Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Cambridge, Massachusetts
5. Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison


William H. Sanders, Ph.D. (IL A ’83), has been chosen to lead the Discovery Partners Institute, an innovation center led by the University of Illinois. Most recently, Dr. Sanders was department head and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His new role as interim director officially began on August 16, 2018. According to the news article from the Chicago Tribune, the institute will focus on “conducting specialized research in computing and big data, food and agriculture, health and wellness, and environment and water.”
