ND Beta Member, UMass Amherst Dean, SAE Paper Award (April 2019)

In late March, the North Dakota Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, at the University of North Dakota, hosted its spring initiation. Roughly 25 new members joined the Association, including Megan Larson, ND B 2020, an electrical engineering major. She posted the image below to her Twitter account and talked about the honor of joining.

Sanjay Raman, Ph.D. (GA A ’87), has been named the new dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Currently, Dr. Raman is associate vice president for the Virginia Tech National Capital Region and president and CEO of the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corp.

He will begin his new position in August 2019. Dr. Raman is also a tenured professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the Virginia Tech Research Center. Read the news announcement for more info on Dr. Raman, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech.

At the SAE 2019 World Congress Experience on April 9, James E. McCarthy Jr., Ph.D. (IN A ’91), received a 2018 SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines.

The award went to the group of co-authors, which included engineers, grad students, professors, and diesel researchers. McCarthy is chief engineer of Vehicle Technologies Innovation at Eaton. The white paper was on “cylinder deactivation for diesel engines.”
