The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has announced that the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory will be renamed the Nick Holonyak, Jr. Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory pending board of trustees approval. Click here to read the news article.
Nick Holonyak Jr., Ph.D. (IL A ‘50), invented the world’s first practical light-emitting diode (LED), and he and his students demonstrated the first quantum well laser, which enabled modern fiber optics communication. Dr. Holonyak is a three-time Illinois alumnus in electrical engineering and a UIUC Emeritus professor.

Nicole A. Kennedy, M.D. (MI H ’95), will receive the Lawrence Technological University’s Alumni Achievement Award at LTU’s Commencement on May 11. Dr. Kennedy is section chief in the department of vascular surgery and medical informatics officer at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.
She earned her degree in electrical engineering from LTU. Read the announcement for more details on Dr. Kennedy who is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
