More than 1,000 volunteers support Tau Beta Pi throughout the year with educational programs, leadership, governance, alumni outreach, mentoring, advising, and through contributions of their personal time and financial support. Auburn Engineers Adapt CPAP Machines Into Ventilators
A team of Auburn engineers, including Michael Zabala, AL A ’07, and Thomas E. Burch, AL A ’79, faculty in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Hayden Burch, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, has developed a way to quickly and inexpensively convert CPAP machines into ventilators, one of the most important tools hospitals have for helping COVID-19 patients. Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machines are commonly used to help people with obstructive sleep apnea breathe more easily during sleep. The Auburn design, called RE-INVENT , is an accessory that would safely repurpose a CPAP into a functional ventilator.
Honors Announced for Tau Beta Pi Students
in Mississippi and New York
Benjamin Reichman, NY H ’21, a junior in the Macaulay Honors College program, is The City College of New York’s fifth Barry M. Goldwater Scholar in as many years. He joins a list of talented students in science, engineering, and mathematics recognized nationally by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
The University of Mississippi civil engineering student Shelby L. Bottin, MS Beta 2020, was elected vice president of the Chi Epsilon Engineering Honor Society and treasurer of the campus chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She has worked as a trainee at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg in the structural mechanics branch of the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory.
Stay-At-Home Government Notice for Tennessee
Tau Beta Pi Headquarters Staff has been working under Safer-At-Home guidelines since March 23 when the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, announced online classes for students. Now, the governor of Tennessee has made staying at home mandatory and businesses to be closed through April 14. Updated COVID-19 information for TBP can be found here. The HQ Staff has been working remotely and will continue to support Tau Beta Pi members. In addition, Director Gomulinski, is hosting Chapter Chats to communicate with chapters and share best practices for virtual initiations and voting.
