Part Two: Tau Bate Grads Receive Accolades and Awards

Jeremy Capuder, NY Xi ’21

Jeremy Capuder was the undergraduate valedictorian for the class of 2021 at Manhattan College. A civil engineering major from Albertson, N.Y., Capuder is a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Epsilon Sigma Pi and Chi Epsilon honor societies. He received the Manhattan College Presidential Scholarship, and scholarships from ACEC New York and New York 811. The recipient of Manhattan College’s Draddy Medal for Excellence in Engineering, he has also received the Manhattan College Brother Azarias Medal for Excellence in Civil Engineering.

During the past year, Capuder worked as a research assistant and analyzed design methods and trends for these structures and the relationships between strength, stiffness, economics and depth of each member. Capuder also has been a resident assistant, supplemental instructor, a eucharistic minister, orientation leader and member of the orchestra and music groups during his time at Manhattan College. This fall, he plans to attend Northeastern University to obtain a Master’s degree in civil engineering.

Andrew J. Whiteman, IA Alpha ’21

Andrew Whiteman, from Bettendorf, Iowa, is the Spring 2021 recipient of the Iowa State University Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) departmental Outstanding Senior Award. Whiteman graduated this semester with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering with a specialization in metals. He is being honored for outstanding academic achievement in the classroom as he is graduating with the distinction of summa cum laude.

Whiteman has been involved in a vast array of activities while at Iowa State that have added a breadth to his education. His previous activities include serving as a College of Engineering tour guide for the Engineering and Ambassador Mentorship Program during his freshman and sophomore years; participating in Cast in Steel with the Steel Founders Society of America during his sophomore year, where he competed in a cross-functional team to design and manufacture a historically accurate Viking axe; and serving as an Engineering Career Fair Ambassador during his sophomore and junior years. Additionally, he has served as the communications director for the IA A Chapter of Tau Beta Pi for the last two years.

Joshua T. Ward, UT Gamma ’21

Joshua Ward, a civil engineering major, is the Utah State University College of Engineering’s 2021 valedictorian. Ward shares his coding skills as manager of the Engineering Tutoring Center. In this position, he assists in developing new tutoring tools and processes for the tutors and collaborates with instructors and teaching assistants (TAs) to teach Excel and other software tools to engineering students. Most recently, he partnered with TAs from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department to teach students how to use Excel and code to solve hydraulics and hydrology problems. He is also vice president of the UT Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Pi.

Ward is now working towards a master’s in transportation engineering. In addition to being named valedictorian, Ward has also received numerous awards at both the department and college level, including Outstanding Senior Scholar, Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher, and Outstanding Junior Scholar.
