Mark Monmonier, Ph.D. (MD A ’64), has been inducted into the GIS Hall of Fame at the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Monmonier is a distinguished professor of Geography at Syracuse University.
According to his URISA GIS Hall of Fame bio page, he is one of the world’s leading cartographers, has authored 19 books, and developed an algorithm “to detect boundaries among vertices of a valuated graph.” He was also cited for his dedication to the GIS community as a mentor to younger scholars.

Team registration for NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge is officially open and will close January 31, 2017. As Phase 2 of the NASA Centennial Challenges, the competition is “intended to inspire and activate citizen inventors to develop and showcase innovative technologies with potential to disrupt the future of space exploration and habitation.” Specifically, the 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge is designed to encourage radical innovation and progress toward developing habitats on the Moon and Mars.

STEM Day 2016 on the campus of the University of Central Florida (UCF) included 1,200 K-12 students from 33 schools participating in a variety of activities and demonstrations focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), led and designed by UCF faculty and students. The Florida Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi contributed to the bi-annual event.
